Why is sliding recommended over casement for kitchens?

Accepted Answer

Casement windows swing outward into the kitchen workspace and need clearance for the sash. Above a counter or sink that swing collides with taps, hanging utensils and shelves. Sliding windows move horizontally inside the frame, take zero swing space, and stay out of the way during cooking.

Will cooking grease and steam damage uPVC frames?

Accepted Answer

No. uPVC is non-porous, does not absorb grease, and wipes clean with mild soap and water. Unlike wood it does not warp from steam, and unlike powder-coated aluminium the surface does not chip. Hardware should be wiped down monthly to prevent grease build-up on the rollers and locks.

What's the best ventilator for a kitchen with no exterior wall?

Accepted Answer

If the kitchen opens only onto a duct or a covered shaft, a uPVC ventilator with an exhaust-fan cutout is the practical solution. The fan vents directly outdoors through the cutout, the louvered panel above keeps insects and dust out, and the sealed frame prevents reverse airflow when the fan is off.

Can a uPVC window be cut to fit around a chimney pipe?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Custom cutouts in the frame or sash for a chimney exhaust pipe are standard work. We measure the pipe diameter and position during the site survey, fabricate the unit with the cutout, and seal the pipe-to-frame joint on site with high-temperature neutral-cure silicone.

How tall should a window above the sink be?

Accepted Answer

A typical sink-area window is 600 to 900 mm tall, with the bottom edge at 1100 to 1200 mm from the floor (above the counter). This height keeps the window clear of splash, gives a comfortable view while standing at the sink, and allows full sliding operation without reaching.

Is toughened glass mandatory in kitchens?

Accepted Answer

It is not mandatory by code in most residential cases, but we recommend it. Toughened glass is four to five times stronger than annealed float, and if it ever does break it shatters into small blunt pieces rather than long shards — a meaningful safety advantage in a room where heavy objects are handled regularly.

Will a sliding window fit a small modular kitchen with limited wall space?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sliding windows are the best fit for compact kitchens precisely because they take zero swing space. We can fabricate units as narrow as 600 mm wide and as small as 450 mm tall. For very small openings we sometimes combine a fixed pane with a small slider so light enters through the fixed section and ventilation comes through the slider.

Can the kitchen window be on the same wall as the gas hob?

Accepted Answer

It is technically allowed but we recommend keeping at least 600 mm of horizontal distance between the hob and the window opening. A window directly above or beside an active hob can be affected by drafts that disturb the flame, and curtains within reach of the flame are a fire hazard. If layout forces this, use fixed glass with a separate ventilator unit elsewhere.

What glass colour stays cleanest looking in a kitchen?

Accepted Answer

Frosted or sandblasted glass hides water spots and grease haze far better than clear glass. For visibility we recommend frosted on the bottom half (where splashes reach) and clear on the top half. Tinted glass also masks minor smudges. Pure clear glass shows every fingerprint and is the highest-maintenance choice in a kitchen.

Does uPVC discolour over time from heat near the cooking area?

Accepted Answer

Our profiles are UV-stabilised and rated for surface temperatures up to about 70°C, which is well above what reaches a window from a kitchen hob. Within that range there is no yellowing or warping over the warranty life. The one situation where heat can affect the frame is if a hot pan is placed directly against it — that is normal-use damage and not covered, but it is also rare in practice.
